Xmas Cheer

3 minutes

Lots of big things have happened over the last month or so, and as a result I’ve been crazy busy.

New House

I recently moved house, leaving the flatshare I was in to move in together with my lovely girlfriend Kerry. It is a bit of a step up, leaving a 3-bed flatshare with 2 other people to having a 5 bedroom house with Kerry! Of course, it is not cheap, lots of things need sorting (bills, taxes, bank details, blah blah blah), plus we needed to buy furniture and things, so it made December a very, very expensive month. However, multiple purchases from Ikea has solved the bulk of that and our new home is looking pretty sweet.

It’s nice to have Kerry around all the time - we’ve been together for over a year now and only seeing each other a couple of weeks at a time or on weekends was fine, but also was beginning to be a bit of a downer. Waking up with her everyday is awesome!

I’ve not had a lot of investment in cryptocurrencies but I recently liquidated most of the holdings that actually cost me money at a reasonable profit. The profits helped make the aforementioned expensive month actually affordable without me exceeding my overdraft. It’s been nuts watching how volatile the market has been with wild swings of ±30%. If I had more time and was a less risk averse, day trading the more volatile stuff couldn’t have netted me some reasonable returns, but I’m generally a long-term investor so I’ve been sitting on things for ages and plan to keep on doing so, especially for the cryptocurrencies that cost me effectively nothing, as I have basically nothing to lose.

So the company I work for, Multiplay, got bought by Unity! This is super exciting and in my humble opinion, awesome. Unity do good work and have very similar goals and vision to Multiplay - and myself in terms of the kind of impact I what to have through my work - so I couldn’t be happier. Lots of exciting stuff on the horizon and I’m really looking forward to making it happen.

So I separated with my now ex-wife just under two years ago after the problems we were having and the lack of any progress to solving them became too much to bear. Since then it’s been a bit of a pain getting to the point of having an actual divorce so I can move on with my life, but now it has finally all come through and been sorted. It’s such a weight lifted to have that all done and dusted and receiving the papers was kind of like a bittersweet (because it’s a reminder of all the hassle it’s been to get to this point - no regrets here) early Xmas present.

I could rant about the journey to get to this point, but I’m not interested sowing any seeds of discord. It’d be easy to be bitter and resentful but frankly I just want to get on with my life, and now I can without the shadow of being a married man hanging over me and Kerry. I know it’s been hard on Kerry and she’s been amazingly strong and supportive the whole way.

Many of the kickstarters I’ve backed over the last year or so have delivered (or started delivering) this last month or so. Lots of new boardgames, RPGs and other random things I’d forgotten about.

The Future

The future is looking good. New home, new parent company, newly free of the past. This is the most positive I’ve felt about the future in a long time, in a large part down to Kerry. I’m looking forward to seeing what the future holds for us.

Merry Xmas everyone.
