Social-networking bullshit

I find it annoying that so many people sign up for all these different social networking sites, sites designed to help people communicate with each other and keep each other updated about what’s going on and yet no-one bloody checks these sites for updates.

For example, Facebook has ‘groups’ that allow multiple people to keep everyone else in their group updated whenever they post something to the group. However, most people don’t keep tabs on anything that go on in the groups they are in. They seem to join ‘just because’ as if it’s some pointless badge to be paraded around “oh look at me, I’m in group X”. It just strikes me as somewhat shallow and pointless, then again so do most of these social fads.

Of course, ‘people not checking’ could just be ‘people not responding’, which is almost as bad. In that case, it’s just rude because then anyone who posts anything has no idea if people are just ignoring them or are just not interested. This situation is especially irritating when you are mentioning things that other people have requested specifically and will bitch about when they find out after the fact.

Quite frankly, I’m not going to contact everyone I know individually to tell them about something. I’m going to use the tools available to make doing that easier – and fairer. If I’m offering something on a first-come, first-served basis, calling people individually is hardly fair, because I’m deciding who comes first.

For fucks sake, use these fucking tools properly or not at all and don’t come bitching to me if you’re too lazy to pay attention and make sure you’re involved.
