Religion

Recently my interest in religion has sparked up again. Now, don’t get me wrong, religion isn’t something I practice. To me religion is one of those fascinating phenomenons, its interesting to observe and to study, but it isn’t something you’d actually want to do. Much like someone might find the study of ancient wars interesting, but they don’t want to go out with a sword and kill people.

So far, I’ve only really looked at Christianity and Shinto, and had a brief look at varying philosophies and ‘ways’ like Taoism. But recently I’ve become interested in some of the more ‘odd’ religions like Discordianism, Scientology and things like the Freemasons and what not. So I’m going to try and acquire some texts on the subjects and explore the different ideas, ideologies and practices these things extol.

Of course, none of this information is particularly useful, I just like learning about these things as a hobby. It’s nice to have some interests outside computing :)

I should probably get my hands on the Torah and Quran at some point, but I find most of the mainstream religions rather dull, though some of the off-shoots and cultish branches of Judaism and Catholicism are interesting.

I guess I like reading this stuff because I’ve always had a fascination with how things work, and this even extends to people. I like trying to understand how people work, and religion seems to have such a big impact on so many peoples lives that you can’t really avoid looking at it if you want to get a glimpse into the working human consciousness.

Well, I’ve ordered some books of amazon for myself that I thought sounded both amusing and interesting like the Book of the Subgenius and the Psychopaths Bible. I tried to get a copy of the Principa Discordia but it wasn’t available. I’m looking forwards to some entertaining reading this christmas.
